Total sugar and added sugar are not identical

On a packaged-product Nutrition Facts label, total sugars include naturally occurring sugars plus any sugars added during processing. Added sugars are the portion introduced through ingredients such as sugar, syrups, honey, or concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. That distinction matters when comparing packaged bases or ingredients.

The FDA explains that the word ‘includes’ before added sugars means those grams are already part of the total-sugars number. Adding the two numbers together would count the added-sugar portion twice.

Serving size changes the comparison

A label describes the labeled serving, not automatically the amount in every cup or finished recipe. Compare serving sizes before comparing grams or percent Daily Value. If a container holds more than one serving, the full-container total can differ from the per-serving line.

The FDA identifies 5% Daily Value or less as low and 20% Daily Value or more as high for added sugars on a packaged-food label. Those reference points explain the label; they do not make a medical recommendation for a particular customer or describe an unlabeled café recipe.

Customization changes the finished drink

A custom drink can combine a base with flavoring, cream, foam, or another add-in. Changing one element may change sweetness, but the exact finished total depends on the products, portions, and size actually used. A general guide cannot calculate that accurately without verified recipe data.

  • Start with the base drink and size.
  • Identify which additions contribute sweetness.
  • Ask what can be adjusted before assuming a substitution is available.
  • Use verified package information when an ingredient label is available.
